Product Description
In the bestselling tradition of The Devil Wears Prada, Karen Yampolsky’s hilarious and disarmingly candid debut goes deep inside the glossy, glamorous, and completely ruthless world of magazine publishing, where bitchiness and betrayal are always in vogue, and this month’s hotshots are just one dud issue away from a pink slip and a one-line career obit on Page Six…

As a teenager at a prestigious prep school, Jill White studied her roommate’s magazines, filled with airbrushed-beyond-recognition photos of whisper-thin blondes who hadn’t finished a meal since third grade. She dreamed of one day starting a magazine of her own that would feature women of all sizes and colors–smart, witty, real women with aspirations beyond tinier thighs and shinier hair.

Flash forward several years and a couple of giant leaps up the career ladder, and Jill has it all. Jill magazine is a huge hit, and her fabulous life comes complete with free designer clothes, an abundance of celeb friends, a shamelessly huge salary, and a framed Time magazine cover in her office featuring her beaming face over the legend, “Jill White, Media Wunderkind.” Now that mega-successful Nestrom Media has taken over Jill’s parent company, its future should be assured. Jill shares the fifteenth floor of the Nestrom building with illustrious Fashionista magazine, and the Nestrom suits are panting with admiration for both Jill and Jill.

But the ashes from the postcoital cigarette have barely hit the floor before Jill’s new bosses start barking about getting ad revenue up and toning down articles like “His penis is not a toy…or is it?” in favor of fluff pieces with the reality star du jour. What smelled like team spirit devolves into a bitter game of manipulation and backstabbing. With Ellen Cutter, the blond, bland, Bergdorfed CEO of Nestrom Media, and Liz Alexander, Jill’s publisher (and Ellen’s conniving sidekick) suddenly aligned against Jill, plus a paranoid new managing editor with an addiction to spying, the situation is as grim as the magazine’s decidedly unfabulous new offices. Reluctant to jump ship, and equally reluctant to watch as her baby morphs into yet another cheesy rag, Jill fights back, even as Ellen and Liz plot her next move for her. With her name, her creation, and her future all on the line, Jill realizes mean girls don’t get left behind in high school–they grow up and work in publishing…

There are many aspects of photography; such as portrait photography, aerial photography, wedding photography, and some other types. However, the most sought after area in the photography field is in the fashion world. To get into the fashion industry as a photographer, you compulsorily need to consider some fundamental fashion photography tips.

Fashion Photography

In our daily lives, we read newspapers and go through many magazines, which have models flaunting their products. But have you ever thought what makes the photos so vibrant and attractive to look at. It is the contribution of the fashion photographers who capture the pictures. These photographers are professionals in their field; and have a good knowledge of photography and a sense of the color, style, lighting, etc. They use all their expertise to come up with such great and adorable pictures of the advertising models.

Tips to Become a Fashion Photographer

If you want to enter into the fashion world as a photographer, you most importantly need to have the right equipment and have to self-practice a lot to get the basics right. The first step is to invest in a good piece of digital SLR, which is known for capturing and producing quality photos. You also need to understand every bit of the functions and features of your photography tool by referring to the user manual. Learn and understand the fundamentals of fashion photography by looking at the pictures in fashion magazines and tabloids. Get to know various poses, color suitability and lighting conditions. Read different books and guides which have useful fashion photography tips from famous fashion photographers. Ask your friends, brothers, or sisters to pose and click their photos. Practice as much as possible, and prepare your portfolio, which is very important for getting into this industry. The portfolio should at least consist of 20 quality photos.

Tips for Fashion Photography with Models

While working with models from the industry, you need to keep three things in mind, such as the precision, the color effect and the lighting conditions. Fashion photography is kind of similar to portrait photography. The only difference is that you have to focus and capture the complete model, instead of only the face, as in case of portrait photography. You also need to know how to make adjustments to your camera settings to produce the optimum results in the available conditions.

One of the most important outdoor fashion photography tips is that you should use natural light at its best to come up with bright, colorful and clear photos. The best time for outdoor photo-shooting is the afternoon, when the sun in right over the head, so you can make optimum use of its light. The best direction for a model to stand in while photo-shooting is when the light falls on the face from the side.

While photo-shooting with models, you necessarily need to know how to position them. You should make sure that they are comfortable in wearing the fashion clothing. Do not put much pressure on the models regarding the poses, as it will only make them feel nervous, which may have an adverse effect on the end result. Try to take photographs in many different angles, and then determine which one is best to be selected.

If you feel you are the butt of all jokes due to your fashion sense, then maybe its time you wisened up to the fact that you need to really revamp your wardrobe. Fashion blunders are common and can be committed by anybody. Here’s the dope on some of the common fashion blunders and ways to avoid them.

Why do some of the renowned celebrities make fashion blunders? Fashion blunders are common and visible in every walk of life and hey, whilst you are reading this, you might even belong to the same group. Having the best look does not always mean buying branded outfits and throwing on all the accessories you lay your hands on! You can make a powerful fashion statement with a simple silhouette and a teardrop pendant as well. All of us by now must have had our share of common fashion blunders and witnessed many such specimens who claim to be fashionable. So, how does one avoid common fashion blunders in our everyday life? There are simple ways to go about this and one must consider every element that would help to complete the right look.

Common Fashion Blunders and ways to avoid them:
If that red-hot outfit looked awesome in the window display, let it remain there! Do not buy colors that do not flatter your skin tone. Bright colors and pale colors need to merge well with your skin, sometimes wearing bright outfits can give a wrong impression about your personality whereas wearing pale or light colors can make you look washed out in totality.

So skin is in and all that jazz! Well, if you can carry off that look, then go ahead and flaunt your body! Too much skin can really not accentuate your looks. Ok, so that halter was designer wear and a backless top is definitely in vogue but maybe it may not really suit just about everybody. One of the things I have personally seen in most parties are women flaunting too much skin with their outfits being totally mismatched in every possible way. A simple example that comes to my mind is pairing a really short skirt with a skimpy top like a tube top or even a short hugging piece. A better way out would be to combine the short skirt with a figure hugging, sequined top that covers the mid riff area. Combine this with knee high boots to complete the look. Even if you have the most fabulous body any girl would give an arm and leg for, wearing an unbalanced and poorly coordinated outfit can actually ruin the look for you. If you must show skin, try to keep it subtle, wear a long skirt with a slit that goes all the way to the thighs or team a halter top that highlights your toned arms with great fitting jeans.

Always ensure you pick the right size. In other words, try on the garment to find the right fit. Do not squeeze into the garment just because you liked its color and cut. The worst sight one can witness would be anybody wearing poorly fitting garments that can make him/her look like a mistake in all respects. You do not want to display the extra bulges and cause something to rip when you are out on a date!

I often remember this particular colleague who would turn up in some of the weirdest combinations. Although we never deemed it right to laugh at her antics, it always had us thinking where those contraptions actually came from. Before I go into the details of this, the lesson to be learned is avoid wearing clothes that are out of style. This does not apply to all styles; fashion after all depends upon the individual person as well. Pulling out those old clothes from the trunk in the attic may not really work wonders for you! You can use it for your masquerade bash,

Too much makeup or usage of inappropriate colors can also damage your look. This is one such common fashion blunder. Before you paint the grease on, do make an effort to check out the time of the day. The fashion rules are light makeup for daytime and heavy makeup for the night hours. Does the makeup suit your outfit and your skin tone? Agreed you are not having time on hand, but that does not mean you need to smear the lipstick beyond your natural lip line. Ugh! This could be the sloppiest way of going about wearing your makeup. Therefore, ensure you have enough time, pick up your brushes and apply the makeup with ease.

If you have been really awaiting that party with tremendous enthusiasm, and plan to dazzle everybody with all that glitz and shimmers, then trust me, you might cause them to look away rather than stare at you with admiration. One of the most common fashion mistakes would be to have your entire outfit crafted with sequins or embellishments, right down to your stilettos. Come to think of it, who doesn’t love embellishments? But you can begin with a sequined handbag combined with a well-cut dress or wear an intricately designed top that could go with a basic denim skirt. The trick is to balance the elements rather than going over the top.

Remember that there is always a difference between being sensual and sexy as compared to looking sleazy. Keep it stylishly elegant and watch heads turn towards you!

Common fashion mistakes may soon be uncommon if you plan your wardrobe with some careful consideration to detailing. It is normal to make fashion blunders but with a little thought, you can have a well-coordinated look that will surely create ripples!

The 1990s was an interesting period in fashion history. Here is a look at some of the 1990s fashion trends that created a phenomenon during that period.

The 1990s was a time that witnessed many fashion trends! From the bizarre to the revival of fashion from the olden days, the 1990s was a time that had it all! There was a subtle side to glitz and also the rise of the grunge look. The 1990s was also a period when colors made a comeback and women took on a bold approach towards clothing. Here, we shall take an in-depth look at some of the 1990s fashion trends and popular styles of clothing.

1990’s Fashion Trends:
The grunge look was prominent in the 1990s. This was highly influenced by the grunge music. Music groups popularized particular clothing that simply caught on. The grunge look was particularly followed in 1992. Teens loved to sport long hair and wore zany sneakers in a splash of colors such as forest green and red. Apart from the grunge look, the 90’s fashion clothing was also about short jackets that hugged the body. Trousers and cargos created a stir and formed an integral past of 1990s fashion trends. Women began wearing trousers that were straight legged or flared. Men opted for the baggy look. Women wore cargo pants with strapped tops. This was particularly evident in 1998. Who can forget Capri pants, which are a rage even now! Men as well as women adopted this fashion in the 1990s.

Leather still remained on the fashion scenario as a 1990’s fashion trend although it may not have been a complete rage. 90’s fashion clothing involved a lot of imitation leather pieces. Girls opted for halter designs and chic leather jackets. These were paired with mini skirts and high heels.

Women also had a variety of dresses to choose from. One particular design that caught the fancy of many women was the petticoat dresses that were soft and girly! These dresses had cowl necks and were very feminine in their overall look.

Men adopted the punk look with great enthusiasm in the 1990s. Teens loved to dye their hair and sport trendy T-shirts. Yet another fashion trend of the 1990s were the vibrant colors sported by teens. Hip hugging denims became a style statement. These were worn with tank tops and accessorized with bling jewelry. One popular design was the peace symbol, which was also seen on many T-shirts.

1990s fashion trends were also about Goth clothing. The Goth look often raised quite a few eyebrows because of the various trends followed. The Goth look was more about creating drama. Black is the main feature of this trend; therefore, those who followed this trend with great passion wore black clothing and knee high black boots to belong to this group.

Workouts turned out to have a hip look during the 1990s. This was the time when lycra clothing made its mark in women’s clothing. Clothing made from lycra blends sold like hot cakes. Such sporty clothing was soon incorporated as daily wear.

The trends in make up also shifted in the 1990s. Nude shades turned popular and women had a wider color palette in brown. One particular fashion trend in the 1990s was the matte lipsticks. Deep shades of red and dark wine colors were worn for the nighttime.

The 1990s thus saw a revival of certain trends as well as some new ones being incorporated. Well, nothing is constant in the world of fashion, therefore, fashion history always has new trends mixed with some vintage ideas to create a new look to wow fashionistas!

Celebrities appeal everyone. Their outfits and accessories are of great interest to women. Every woman dreams of looking like them, but take a step backward, thinking, it is not their cup of tea. Hey! Who told you so? There is no such ‘impossible’ word in fashion dictionary. Moreover, celebrities are also general women like you. They are not born being perfectionist in fashion. Everything they have learnt after grown up only. Thus, all women can look like a celebrity but for that you have to seriously follow some tips. Here are the tips:

Reveal Assets

Every figure has some assets and some flaws. One needs to learn an art of dressing that can showcase pluses of the body and hide flaws. This exactly what celebrities do? To look for ideal clothes, first you should be well acquainted with your body type. When you enter departmental store, you should know what style clothes enhances you and frames you well.

Dresses that adorn you well do wonders to your appearance. For instance, if having wide hips, hide them with A-line dresses. For slimmer appearance, empire waist dresses are perfect, as they take attention towards upper part and away from stomach. Deep neckline dresses are good for showcasing beautiful cleavage. Women with broad shoulders should dress smartly, to conceal the broadness of their physique. Avoid off-the-shoulder dresses as they reveal broad shoulders, instead opt for raglan sleeves dresses for downplaying shoulders. And so on. Assets can be best revealed by dresses which define the structure of body well and dresses up in an effortlessly chic way.

Look for right size clothes

Size of clothes should complement your figure well. Right size clothes are major fashion mantra to look chic and voguish. But, many women opt for bigger clothes thinking they would hide their flaws. But in actual, larger clothes do just its opposite. Same applies to tight fitting clothes also. Instead of bringing out assets, tight clothes protrude flaws out. They should also be avoided. Right fitting clothes are just appropriate, as they define each curve well and hide defects.

All time favorite dresses

There are some basic dress styles that are perfect for all times. They are easy to pull of, whenever confused about what to wear. These basic dresses are trendiest at all times. These must-have wardrobe items are A-line dresses, skirts, leather jackets, black dress, blue jeans, silk top etc. Even after years these dresses will make you look trendy and stylish, as they will never become passé.

Stilettos

In footwear, stilettos are must for every woman to have in their closet. Look at any celebrity and they will never be seen without stilettos. They are an easiest way to look stylish without doing much. If you are not comfortable in heels, opt for low heel shoes. Low and high, both heels help in elongating figure and add a sophisticated, feminine touch to looks.

Accessories

Accessories are inseparable from stylish look. Without them, no stylish appearance is complete. Celebrities are also never seen without them. Accessories are their left hand. For spicing up looks, always carry accessories with you like bags, belts, scarves, jewelry and sunglasses. They complete every stylish outfit.

All this is enough for attaining a celebrity look. Most important is to know how to look your best. Celebrities’ look their best, that’s why, looks so appealing. Try to look best and above tips will help you out on it.

Fashion in the 1900s took a drastic turn, as the fashion industry flourished, especially in Europe. Let’s take a look at some of the 1900s fashion trends that were established for men and women.

The period belonging to the 1900s was known as the Edwardian era, and this was an important period in terms of fashion. With the industrial revolution, mass production of clothes became possible, thus, increasing the awareness of the latest fashion trends, among men and women. What’s more, people of almost every class adhered to them, even though there were different requirements for formal and informal wear, morning wear, afternoon wear, tea-time wear, sports wear, and evening wear, especially in the case of women. A look at the 1900s fashion, will give us a detailed explanation of the fashion trends in that era.

1900s Fashion for Women

Early 1900s fashion trends for women were characterized by the hourglass silhouette, where the waist was contracted with the use of a corset, and the hips and bust were made to look fuller. On observing the profile of this look, one would notice the famous ‘S-curve’ silhouette, the trend of the day. The blouses and dresses were puffed, high-collared necklines were prevalent, and the waist was narrowed further with a belt. Women wore exceptionally long skirts and dresses, several of which even had a train.

Dresses were mostly tailor made, simply to achieve the ‘perfect fit’. The more trendy women ensured they followed all the trends and had the latest in fashion. Dresses were enhanced with beads, laces and net. Skirts were made of soft, flowing, fabrics like satin and velvet.
Informal Wear: During the summer, women wore cotton, washable dresses which were enhanced by laces and embroidery, as well as pintucks. During travel or outdoor activities, or as informal wear, women wore outfits similar to those of men, i.e., a bodice, accompanied by a shirt with a high collar.
Formal Wear: As formal wear, women wore tweed or woolen suits, that comprised an ankle length skirt with a matching jacket. The 1900s fashion trends demanded that these be worn in style, adorned with a hat and the fanciest furs.
Hats: No outfit in the 1900s was complete without a hat. Hats that women wore in those days were large and broad, embellished with feathers, flowers, fruits and ribbons. Some were even decorated with stuffed birds. Hairstyles were always high, worn in a bun.
However, towards the end of the decade, curvy was out, and its place was taken by the straight look. The full bust was narrowed down, as were the hips. Clothes now made to fit the original body form. The famous hourglass silhouette, was now transformed into one that was straight, which exuded elegance and grace, and was a trend that continued into several following decades. The high waistlines continued to be the order of the day. Hats, also continued to embellish the overall outfit.

1900s Fashion for Men

Different wear for different times of the day was also a norm in 1900s fashion for men, that included morning coats, lounge suits and other formal wear.
Informal Wear: During winters, knee length overcoats were the dominant style. During travel or other outdoor activities, men wore heavy tweed jackets, pleated at the front and back, held together with a matching belt. A popular informal shirt was the striped shirt. Men’s shirts were characterized by tall and stiff collars. Ties were also a part of informal wear. Narrow ties with the ‘four-in-hand knot’ were a part of the informal attire for men in the 1900s. Trousers were fitted at the cuffs, and were short in length.
Formal Wear: As formal wear, men wore lounge coats and for social gatherings and dinners, dinner jackets were the norm, matched with a white shirt. A formal outfit was incomplete without a necktie. Evening wear was characterized by the white bow tie. Day time formal wear included a morning coat accompanied by a high-buttoned, single breasted waistcoat. Ascot ties were worn with dress shirts as part of formal day wear.
Hats: Hats were more popular as part of the attire for upper class men. Top hats were common among other styles such as the Homburg hats, that had a dent in the crown. Hat styles in the 1900s also included the bowler hats, which had a round crown, and were made of soft felt. During summer, men wore straw boater hats, that were flat, and adorned with a ribbon around the crown.

This was all about 1900s fashion for men and women. People all over the world have always been conscious about fashion trends, even in historical times. To think it is a recent trend, is a misconception. Fashion has always dominated the lifestyle of individuals belonging to all classes, and will continue to do so.

A bizarre look or fashion with its own point of view; Gothic fashion has attracted attention for various reasons till date. Here’s a look at some of the interesting aspects about Gothic fashion.

Gothic fashion to many may seem absurd but there is also a certain kind of beauty that is attached to it. Gothic fashion is bold and totters dangerously on being labeled as bizarre and weird. Black has ruled Gothic fashion and Goths had their own reasons behind this color being the highlight of their attire. Black ruled not only as far as the garments were concerned, it was seen even in the make up as well. Does this sound strange to you? Well, maybe not, if you completely follow fashion and are aware of the ancient and modern trends of the ever-changing fashion scenario. Need some dope about Gothic fashion and reasons behind their so-called strange attire? Read on for some interesting bits and bites about Gothic fashion.

Strange are the ways of Gothic Fashion!
For those who are newbies to Gothic fashion, this is a kind of clothing style that is worn by both the sexes that belong to the Goth Subculture. Goth subculture originated in the United Kingdom and is found in many countries. People who belong to the Goth culture may or may not share similar tastes in music and fashion. Fashion tastes of the Goth culture can range from being punk, medieval, it can include clothes that are from the Renaissance culture or can even be considered androgynous.

Spiky hair and black nails and what not! Gothic fashion has always been regarded as bizarre. This culture meant to express various things through fashion. In other words, Gothic fashion meant a kind of freedom and sexual liberation. It also meant making an individual statement and sport a ‘don’t care attitude’ about what the society would probably think about those who follow Gothic fashion. Gothic fashion is about being liberal about one’s views on various aspects of life.

The most distinguishable factor about Gothic fashion is the use of the color black as mentioned earlier. This is often co-ordinated with bold colors. Gothic fashion is not completely anti-life just because black makes a strong statement. Although this has invited criticism, Goths believe that death is something that cannot be ignored. They believe this is also a part of our existence and it cannot be overlooked. This is probably why when women wear black eye shadow and clothing it can seem to be a way of expressing grief to people, who do not really know the beliefs behind Gothic fashion.

Gothic fashion involves clothes that are in wild hues and use silhouettes that bring focus to one area of the body such as corsets or tight sleeves. The idea is to attract attention! There are various cultures that fall under the main Goth subculture such as the Victorian Goth, Goth Punk, Romantic Goth etc. Flowing skirts, stylish sweeping dresses, hats and canes for men all form a part of Gothic fashion. Gothic fashion always believes in an expression of yourself no matter what the gender may be or where you may come from. Gothic fashion has a symbolism, which is not known to everybody though many love to follow this route. Dark eyeliner, tight jeans, chains and studs, powdered and white faces, black nails, pants with ripped edges all form a part of Gothic fashion. Tattoos also were used elaborately to make a style statement.

Gothic fashion lets one dress according to one’s mood. Today, the ancient styles have evolved is such a way, that they are much easier to follow due to the various modifications. Although you may find it really bizarre to try it out, I am sure many are bound to feel a twinge of jealousy, once they see someone sport such a look with great style and attitude. Gothic fashion therefore is truly unique in its own way. One thing is for sure; this dramatic look is definitely here to stay for a long period of time.
